Of Career Paths

Here's a story.
l
A young office girl, let's call her Karen, is thinking of leaving the office in which she is currently employed at, in search of a more fulfilling career. Though she is earning enough and is working with some of the most respected people in the country, she's decided that this is not her niche and that she needs to leave the office as soon as possible for her to be able to find the job, where she would really feel she belongs.
l
Karen, because of not loving her job has been arriving in her office an hour and a half late this past few months. Everyday upon arrival, (an hour and a half late), she needs to deal with the starings of the people at the ground floor (or so she thinks since she's feeling guilty) while waiting for the elevator to get her at the 9th floor of their building. These people and everybody in their office are nice to her though.
l
Karen is actually very lucky because upon her application, she's given a position as one of the direct staff of the office's BIGboss (one of the 4 executive assistants to be specific). And in less than a year, was promoted and almost doubled her salary! She is of course, very thankful, but feels that she's not deserving of all these luck, especially when she is aware that some employees alot older than her (even older than her mom) and have been serving the office for more than half of their lives are earning only half of what's she's earning. But she can't do anything about it. Besides, she knows that life is as usual, so damn UNFAIR to some.
l
Karen's daily routine in the office goes something like this: She'll make her own coffee upon arrival (an hour and a half late); goes straight to her laptop to check for e-mails; browses through the papers on her table and decides to do them later if she finds that there is no in need of her urgent action; checks her tons of accounts on the web (including friendster, blogger, facebook, multiply, etc.); opens her yahoo messenger but since it's doing crazy all the time, she'll chooses meebo instead and have some chats with friends; and, occassionally be interrupted by some phone calls. Then she'll decide to do some 25% of what she REALLY needs to do (we mean here, WORK) which she can finish in 20 minutes. Then, she'll have her lunch along with the staff of the BIGboss. After eating, she'll do again some 25% of her work which she can finish in 25 minutes. Then she'll decide that she's already bored so she will surf the net to look for interesting sites. She's occassionaly be called by their BIGboss to do some urgent (like you-have-to-do-this-right-now!) things so she'll panic her ass out but still manages to do good; answers phonecalls; surf the net some more and get interrupted by some 'clients' which she needs to be interviewed in person for her to make some communications. These 'clients' sometimes pisses the hell out of her but she's suppose to be extra-super-nice to people, so she'll be.
l
This lucky-but-sooooo-ungrateful-girl-for-not-giving-importance-to-her-job Karen is of course everyday feeling guilty of not being worthy of the salary she is receiving. She is actually spending only 10% to 25% of her time in regular days doing her WORK and is only giving 30% to 50% of her heart in everything she does in her office. WHY? Because SHE'S BORED of what she's doing.
l
SO, WHAT IS IT THAT YOU REALLY WANT TO DO?

Karen: To be quite honest, it’s a bit hard to answer when you have no clue what it is you like or love to do anymore. I love to paint. I love to cook. I love dogs and I love to go to beautiful places. I don't know where exactly those four combined would lead to. Maybe a traveler? Yes. I will travel to paint and to learn the culinary of various places around the world...with a dog? LOL. That would be great!!!
l
BUT SERIOUSLY, If I could have things my way, I want to OWN a restaurant or a coffee shop. A charming and a cozy place to dine at. I ALSO want to be a CHEF, so I need to GO to a culinary school. AND, I want to be a FLIGHT STEWARDESS...and to own a school for pre-schoolers and TEACH there...and I want to WRITE story books for children. AND to work with WWF and UNICEF. BUT I also want to be a WEDDING PLANNER. Or maybe I'll just work abroad for a greener pasture for me to have the restaurant and the coffee shop and the school faster. Watchathink?

THEN WHY NOT PURSUE THE THINGS THAT YOU REALLY WANT TO DO?

Karen: I don't know. I'm not yet ready. But I will definitely leave this office. Hopefully within this year. maybe that would be a good start...to pursue the things I REALLY want to do.

*a BIG and hopeful sigh here*

A PROMISING AND FULFILLING CAREER, I WILL HAVE IT. :)
